Group Overview
Using our voices to communicate continues to be the most natural and the easie
st way to exchange ideas and thoughts. At MSR Asia, the Speech Group is workin
g hard to turn their ideas into reality and improve spoken-language technologi
es, enable human-computer voice interaction, and enrich human-to-human voice c
ommunications. The group’s current focus includes speech recognition to enabl
e computers to facilitate access to data, help create content, and perform tas
ks; speech synthesis to enable computers to speak with a human-sounding voice,
to respond and provide information, and to read; and spoken-document retrieva
l and processing to enrich communication between people.
Roles & Responsibilities
We require two students to perform research into the exciting area of automati
cally trainable speech synthesis. This technology will be applied to various h
uman-computer communication or telecommunication systems, e.g. information inq
uiry, reservation and ordering, and reading emails. The student will learn man
y skills in speech processing, audio processing, as well as some software deve
lopment.
Requirements:
1 good at c coding
2 good knowledge on machine learning and pattern recognition

3 good team-working and communication skill

4 good at learning
5 some experiences on text, speech and audio signal processing
6 6 months full-time internship with supervisor’s permission

Mobile Augmented Reality by Rich sensors
The Mobile Augmented Reality Applications project explores utilizing rich sens
or (GPS, Camera, etc.) equipped mobile devices as platforms for sensor-based,
video see-through mobile augmented reality. The project also investigates new
and exciting cloud based applications enabled by this technology, and UI solut
ions and paradigms motivated by the next generation mobile devices.

Role & Responsibilities

Required Qualification
1. BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electronic Engineer or any related technical
field and possess the following skills;

Microsoft Research Asia is recruiting interns for Stars of Tomorrow Internship
Program.

Position: Full-time Intern
Group: System Research Group (System)

Work Location: Beijing

Position 1:
Project Introduction
We are working on a Large Scale Content Based Image Retrieval project together
with Media Computing Group. One primary research topic is to find visual word
s from a large set of image features. We’re going to extract SIFT features fr
om millions of images and analyze them using parallel computing techniques, wh
ich will also involve various techniques from machine learning and data mining
area. The goal is to understand the properties of Visual Words on a large dat
a set and possibly answer the question whether there exists a stable set of Vi
sual Words which can apply to different image set.

Role & Responsibilities
1. Conduct large scale clustering experiments on different sample sets.
Try to analyze the properties of clustering result.
2. Write parallel programs to aid the analyzing work.
Apply the analyzing result to CBIR applications, such as nearly duplicate imag
e detection.

Required Qualification
1. MS/PhD in Computer Science;
2. Good understanding of computer vision techniques. Have experience cond
ucting data driven experiments.
3. Good C programming skills, with background in networked and multithr
eaded software development.
Background of machine learning techniques is a big plus.

Position 2:
Project Introduction
In this internship, we would like to explore Robotics and its impact on system
software design. Robotics is becoming an increasingly important and active re
search area and we want to explore the impact of it on programming models, inf
ormation sharing and reliability issues. We propose to build a simple camera c
arrying robot as an initial case study for studying the issues of development
on robots.

Role & Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible to survey various robotic software platforms an
d get familiar with the i-Robot hardware to build a simple camera carrying rob
ot. The initial scenario is for the robot to take videos on a round table when
a meeting is taking place.

Required Qualification
4. MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electronic Engineer or any related technic
al field and possess the following skills;
5. Experience in Robotics a strong plus

Program

Position 1:
Project Introduction
BRDF measurement using Optic Fibers … BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distrib
ution function) is a function that defines how light is reflected at an opaque
surface. It plays an important role in computer graphics to render photoreali
stic scenes. To obtain the BRDFs from real-world scenes, we need to measure th
e reflectance property of the scene points. We develop a new system that effic
iently measures the BRDF. Unlike previous approaches, our method can achieve a
dense measurement of BRDFs without any occlusions. The application of this de
vice and result will be
1. Database of BRDFs
2. e-Heritage (photorealistic rendering of cultural heritages)
Role & Responsibilities
The major role is going to be experiment of the system. The system is yet to b
e built; therefore, it is possible that the intern will work on the hardware d
evelopment part depending on his/her start date. Most of the work will be
1. Writing software for running the system.
2. Performing measurement (experiment)
Writing software tools for data management for the measured BRDFs.
Required Qualification
1. Good programming skill in C /C#.
2. Basic knowledge of camera, projector (can control from a PC)

Position 2:
Project Introduction
Hand-held 3-D camera … In this project, we develop a low-cost and practical 3
-D modeling device for recovering surface shape and reflectance from a set of
images. We develop a new camera by attaching a point light source to a hand-he
ld video camera. In this way, we add a photometric constraint to the multi-vie
w stereo problem to reliably estimate the 3-D geometry of the scene. We aim at
deploying the system in real-world applications, especially for e-Heritage.

Role & Responsibilities
The prototype of the camera system is ready, but it is not quite ready for use
because of two reasons:
1. Hardware … Now it uses IEEE 1394 camera with an LED that requires DC power
source. We like to develop a fully handheld camera using a standard video cam
era a portable point light source.
2. Software … Improvement of the computational efficiency.

The candidate should have a basic knowledge about camera systems and software
development knowledge in C , especially image processing aspect. It is prefer
red that the candidate has a computer vision background, but it is not require
d.
Required Qualification
1. Good programming skills.
2. This project is going to be mostly research development type of work. There
fore, it would be nice the candidate is motivated by not only publication purp
oses.
